Programming
Educate
Lake Effects offers a free tutoring program for students in Jr. high and High school. Adults from the community and older students maintaining a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher are eligible to become tutors. Our facility is equipped with a Cyber-Lab for doing homework or to access the internet. Drug awareness/prevention programs are offered through various prevention agencies, and career counseling and advisement is also available to high school students.
Enrichment
Lake Effects provides instruction in the Fine Arts. Classes are provided with minimal costs for a two months duration. To end the classes the students hold an exhibit to display and possibly sell their work. Classes in the Performing Arts are also offered. Instruction in music, drama, and dance are provided for the community. At the end of each quarterly session an evening is designed to showcase their talents and hard work. We also feel it is important to help prepare youth for adulthood, therefore life skills courses are offered.
Our first enrichment program offered was a design and sewing program. The young ladies involved in the iDesign program learned the basic steps in sewing, from how to operate a sewing machine, to proper care for clothing. In the design portion of the program the ladies are learning to design and produce their own trendy clothing at a fraction of the cost. This five week program will have an intermediate and advanced program offered at a later date.
Empowerment
The youth here at Lake Effects have the opportunity to take part in the entrepreneurial programs offered. Students will form a company, secure funds, acquire equipment, produce products, advertise, and sell their products. This will teach them business practices, trades, and also develop unique employment opportunities.
The first program developed was Silkscreen Solutions. Students learn Graphic Design skills, silk screen procedures etc. Apparel is designed and produced by the youth and 100% of the proceeds are used to fund many different enrichment programs.
Entertainment
We strive to have a great time. Our game room is equipped with many activities to keep everyone occupied, and from time to time we have special events like danes and open mic nights.
